Jewish Quarter & Ghetto

About the tour
On this Jewish Quarter tour of Kraków you discover Kazimierz, once a town of its own and now a district of the city, with a turbulent past. In the 15th century it was divided into a Christian part and a Jewish part. At its height, the Jewish town had seven synagogues, a ritual bath, a cemetery and a slaughterhouse. For 500 years Poles of different faiths lived here as neighbours, until the Second World War changed everything.
On foot or by bike, your licensed guide leads you through the narrow streets and hidden corners of today’s Kazimierz, with stories about the traditions, culture and faith of the people who lived here. Then we cross the Vistula, the river that once separated two towns, to Podgórze.
In the former ghetto you’ll hear a tragic story of heroes and traitors. But the tour ends with hope: the revival of Jewish life in Kazimierz today, with its festivals, its culture and its traditions.
